Announcement:

This was an unusually heavy week for large public projects in Massachusetts. Over the next couple of days I’ll be adding to the contractor email contacts and website links. Thank you for your patience as I process this batch.

I’m cheering for you. Now go out and crush it.

A Few Notes on Small Public Projects:
Consult the bid documents: Always check the official project documents for full details including scope, requirements, and deadlines.
Bonding: Public projects in Massachusetts frequently require bonding. If you don’t already have it in place, consider reaching out to a surety broker to line it up prior to bidding on a project.
Prevailing wage: Assume prevailing wage for public work at all price points.

Why should small contractors care about large public projects? Large projects
show who the active primes worth knowing are. You’re not here for the
contract, you’re here for the contacts.

One Question: What’s One Thing a Contractor Can Do Today to Improve Their Ability to Get Bonded?

This week’s featured expert is Pete Covill, Certified Insurance Counselor with HCC Insurance.

Bonding is one of the biggest barriers keeping smaller contractors out of larger public jobs. Pete put together a practical breakdown for MTW readers this week on what contractors should start doing before they need a bond for a project.

Pete’s advice:
Don’t wait until the opportunity appears to start organizing your financial records and project history.

In the article, Pete covers:
• What surety companies look for
• The key documents contractors should organize now
• How pre-approval and a “Letter of Bondability” works
• Why preparation can speed up future bid opportunities

Which GC Won this Project?: Yankee Doodle Bike Path, Billerica, $17M

Billerica is moving forward with Phase 1 of the Yankee Doodle Bike Path, a new shared-use path connecting the Bedford town line to the Concord Road and Middlesex Turnpike area. The project will create a visible regional bike and pedestrian connection linking Billerica to existing trail networks and improving access between neighborhoods, schools, and recreation areas.
